Executive Function Support

Executive function support is an approach to help K-12 students develop skills that will help them succeed academically and in life.

Executive function refers to a set of cognitive processes that include:
- Attention
- Working memory
- Planning and organization
- Self-monitoring
- Impulse control

Here are some strategies that can support executive function development in K-12 students:

Modeling | Adults can model good executive function habits and highlight how they use them in their daily lives.
Break tasks into manageable chunks | Large projects can be overwhelming, so breaking tasks down into smaller, more manageable pieces can make them less daunting.
Provide visual aids | Graphic organizers, agendas, and other visual aids can help students process information and organize their thoughts.
Use checklists | Checklists can help students keep track of tasks and monitor their progress.
Encourage self-reflection | Encouraging students to reflect on their progress and identify areas for growth can help them become more aware of their own executive function skills.
Offer incentives | Positive reinforcement can be a powerful motivator to help students develop executive function skills.

These are just a few of the many strategies that ML Tutoring tutors use to support executive function in K-12 students.
